Free National Sex Offender Search by State

In 1994 Megan Kanka was brutally raped and murdered. Such a tragic loss, yet we have lost so many of our innocent children due to these despicable crimes.

Today, we have the Sexual Offender Registries as a tool to help protect our children.

Megan's Law was passed May 17, 1996 by President Clinton. It requires each state of the United States to register persons who have been convicted of sex crimes against children.

Since that time, year by year, more states are putting databases of this information online. To date, there are only a small handful of states remaining, which do not have this information available online.

However, be aware, the information is on file in each state. Each state is allowed their own discretion as to whether and how they will release that information to the public with the exception of Level III sex offenders.

If the sexual predator is a Level III sex offender, the law now requires that a photo and the offender's information are to be made available to the public.

Being a mother of 3, I can only hope that ALL states will soon place this information online.

Most young teens use some kind of messenger to chat with their school friends online. Sexual offenders use this to their advantage.

Here the predator can hide their true identity. They can "be anyone" online. Your young teen may think they are talking to a peer or another teen, but in reality they are talking to an adult posing as a teen. These predators will make friends with your kids, earn their trust, then attempt to convince them to meet with them in person.

Facts about Kids Online:

1 in 4 kids have been sexually solicited online by an adult.

38% have engaged in sexual conversation online.

57% have used the web to flirt.

50% have had phone calls with people they met online.

Kids who think they are talking to a peer their own age, can be talking to ANYONE. What better place for a pedophile to find innocent young children?

Talk to your kids about it! This can't be stressed enough. Knowledge of this is crucial. Most kids are very trusting souls which makes them a prime target. Make them aware that the people they are talking to online could be anyone, any age, and have devious reasons for earning their trust.

What you can do:

1. Use parental controls and don't allow them to use instant messengers. This one is hard to enforce as chat rooms are plentiful on the internet. It is a favorite pastime for kids.

2. Tell your children: Never give out your real name, address, school name, parents name, relatives names, sport teams names, or any other vital information which can lead the unknown people they are talking with to the child. Talk at great lengths about this with your child to be sure they understand.

3. Monitor your child's activity online. This can be accomplished quite easily with special software. We will be offering a new product for this shortly. Installing this tool is quick, easy and simple. It will allow you to see all conversations your children have online and the kids will never know it is there. I have used it and I highly recommend it.

To Catch A Predator

If you have not watched this new series on Dateline, it is a setup for child predators who contact children online. Chris Hansen along with a crew and the police, set up a house with a decoy who tells people online she is only 13 and when they ask her to have sex, she tells them where she lives.... the decoy house. I have to say, I was absolutely disgusted and astounded at the number of men who are trying to meet up with children online with the intent of having sex. In the episode which aired on Tuesday, January 30th, there were 38 men who visited the Long Beach, California decoy house within 3 days! PARENTS, YOU MUST WAKE UP TO THIS VERY REAL THREAT TO OUR CHILDREN!
